Its active form, oxypurinol, also inhibits this enzyme. It does not disrupt the building of purines.

How is allopurinol usually taken?

This page covers the US label for allopurinol tablets taken by mouth, with the dosing the label gives for adults.

This is label-level information, not personal advice. Indian pack labels may differ, and your prescriber's instruction always comes first.

For adults, the label describes starting at a low dose of 100 mg daily and increasing by 100 mg at weekly intervals until uric acid is 6 mg/dL or less, without going above 800 mg daily.

The label gives an average of 200 to 300 mg daily for mild gout and 400 to 600 mg daily for moderately severe tophaceous gout. Doses above 300 mg are divided.

The low start helps reduce the risk of gout flare-ups. Colchicine or anti-inflammatory drugs are usually continued while adjusting the dose.

  • Start at 100 mg daily
  • Increase weekly by 100 mg
  • Doses above 300 mg are divided
  • Maximum 800 mg daily
