How does spironolactone work?
Spironolactone blocks the hormone aldosterone in the kidney tubules. This makes the body pass more sodium and water while keeping potassium.
It acts both as a diuretic and as a blood-pressure-lowering medicine.
It blocks aldosterone so the body loses salt and water but keeps potassium.

How is spironolactone usually taken?
This page covers the US label for spironolactone tablets taken by mouth, with the dosing the label gives for adults.
This is label-level information, not personal advice. Indian pack labels may differ, and your prescriber's instruction always comes first.
For swelling in adults, the label describes an initial 100 mg daily in single or divided doses, within a range of 25 to 200 mg daily. It is usually continued at least five days before adjusting.
For primary hyperaldosteronism testing, the label describes 400 mg daily for four days or three to four weeks. Before surgery, 100 to 400 mg daily is described.
- Dose depends on the condition
- Single or divided daily doses
- Lowest effective dose for long-term use
- Blood potassium monitoring is advised
The daily dose varies by condition, and potassium levels need monitoring.
